Speed Dreams 2.0 introduced the simulation of a real sky dome, along with customizable weather conditions: the user can choose the time of day, the cloud cover and the intensity of rainfall to have during the race. In this context the most relevant change since TORCS − introduced in Speed Dreams 2.0 − is the “Career” mode: here the player can compete with different car classes, during multiple seasons, on randomly selected tracks and against balanced random opponents, earning points in championship rankings. Because racing modes are defined by plain-text configuration files, custom ones can be freely created. Speed Dreams features several different racing modes while some offer greater customization than others, most generally try to reproduce real types of races. Complex events, such as various categories of championships or endurance races, are also available. It mainly aims to implement exciting new features, cars, tracks and AI opponents to make a more enjoyable game for the player, while constantly pushing forward visual and physics realism.

Speed Dreams is a fork of the open racing car simulator Torcs started in 2008, it has now reached a clearly higher realism level in visual and physics simulation, thanks to its active development team and growing community. Speed Dreams is a 3d cross-platform, open source motorsport simulation and racing game. The game is available as binary installer and as source package on the official website

TORCS is designed to enable pre-programmed AI drivers to race against one another, while allowing the user to control a vehicle. The next big development goal is an online racing mode. Enjoy racing against your friends in the split screen mode with up to four human players. The game play allows different types of races from the simple practice session up to the championship.
The simulation features a simple damage model, collisions, tire and wheel properties (springs, dampers, stiffness, …), aerodynamics (ground effect, spoilers, …) and much more. Graphic features lighting, smoke, skid marks and glowing brake disks. It is also possible to drive with the mouse or the keyboard. You can steer with a joystick or steering wheel, if the device is supported by your platform. TORCS features many different cars, tracks, and opponents to race against. TORCS stands for The Open Racing Car Simulator.

Building around Vamos, using code adapted from his earlier 3D engine experiments, Joe created the first version of VDrift. Looking around online, the open source Vamos Automotive Simulator performed much better, although the graphics and features were minimal. A fan of Gran Turismo, Joe had a lot of fun trying to drift in GT4, though he was disappointed with GT4′s physics after loss of traction. VDrift was created by Joe Venzon in early 2005.
The driving physics engine was re-written from scratch but was inspired by and owes much to the Vamos physics engine. VDrift is a cross-platform, free/open source driving simulation made with drift racing in mind. They are: Vdrift, TORCS, Speed Dreams, Supertuxkart, Racer, Trigger Rally and Stunt Rally I’m not a great fan of this genre but I’ve played some of them and they have great graphics, and you’ll not miss what you can find on a Windows Computer. Today I propose to you 7 nice games about driving, they are all open source and freely downloadable.
